"Kay" Mary Kathleen (Kervin) Ettles

December 20, 1925 ~ June 17, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old

ETTLES (Kervin), Mary Kathleen “Kay” (December 20th, 1925 – June 17th, 2016).

Kay was born in the family home in Callander, Ontario on December 20th, 1925. She was the eldest of four children and the only daughter of Florence and Thomas Kervin. She died in her 91st year on Friday, June 17th at North Bay Regional Health Centre while recovering from a stroke she had suffered several weeks earlier. Between those dates, Kay lived life to the fullest. She grew up in Callander with her younger brothers Tom, Richard and Donald, and with an army of relatives worked at Kervin’s Camp on Lake Nipissing, a time when her love affair with nature, people and a good story developed. Kay studied nursing at St. Mike’s in Toronto and later served as receptionist for Dr. Frank Chirico in North Bay. That’s when she met and later married her dearest friend and soulmate, Roy. They raised two beautiful children, Stephen (Loma) and Shelley (Dan) and as the years passed, were blessed with the gifts of two grandchildren, Nathan (Tracy) and Joel (Amy), and two great-grandchildren, Callie and Brady. In addition to supporting Roy on many travels in his role as a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, Kay was a long time member, and at one time President, of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Women’s League in Callander. Her faith was a constant companion on her journey through life –and what a rich and full journey! So much to be proud of, so many talents, so much cause for joy: the love and devotion of a large extended family and so many caring friends, her wit, intelligence, attention to detail, determination, discipline, compassion, style, and thirst for knowledge, her interest in genealogy, love of gardening, and her remarkable gifts of memory and for storytelling. We will never forget Kay’s loving, caring and gentle nature –giving freely without expectation, never judging, never criticizing– and that inviting smile and infectious laugh that began and ended every encounter. Kay, you are loved; you will be missed; you will never be forgotten.
