Sister Edwina Sheahan

It is with sadness that the Sisters of St. Joseph announce the death of Sister Edwina Sheahan on Monday, January 2, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, Ontario.

Sister Edwina (Edwina Joanna Sheahan) was born December 17, 1922, on a small farm near Douglas, Ontario.  Sister’s home parish was St. Michael’s in Douglas. She attended the rural elementary separate school in Adamston, and St. Michael’s High School in Douglas.   She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie on July 2, 1947.

After receiving her teaching certificate, Sister Edwina was assigned to various schools in Schreiber, North Bay, Port Arthur, Sault Ste. Marie, Elliot Lake, Sudbury and Blind River. In 1969, Sister Edwina changed her career path attending the School of Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy at the University of Manitoba.  Following her studies, she worked as an Occupational Therapy assistant at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Thunder Bay until 1979.  Sister Edwina then served in volunteer Pastoral ministry in retirement homes in North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Kateri Centre, Thunder Bay, and St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay.

Sister Edwina is predeceased by her parents Jeremiah Sheahan and Veronica Windle, brothers James Joseph and Clarence Mark and sisters Regina Mary and Elizabeth Olive (Sister Mary Comerford).  She is survived by her loving sister-in-law Mrs. Clarence Sheahan (Margaret), nieces, nephews and their families.

Sister Edwina will be remembered as a woman with a ‘happy, grateful heart’.  She loved music and her love of dance as a young girl in Douglas never lost its attraction in her senior years.  Sister Edwina was grateful for the care and support of all of her caregivers.  She in turn was keenly interested in each one she encountered.  Sister Edwina’s love for her congregation and all who appreciated a listening ear and heart were remembered in her daily prayers and especially in her commitment to praying the rosary.

The body of Sister Edwina will be received at the Motherhouse at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2017.  A prayer vigil will be held in the Holy Family Chapel at 7:00 pm.  Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2017.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Bay.

“May Sister Edwina rest in peace”
