Sister Anne Sartor (Sister M. Augustine)
October 14, 1920 - September 15, 2017

It is with sadness that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the death of Sister Anne Sartor (Sister M. Augustine) at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse on September 15, 2017, in her 80th year of Religious Life.

Sister Anne was born, October 14, 1920, in Fort William, now Thunder Bay, Ontario.  She was the eldest of three girls, born to Erminia Battiston and Augusto Sartor.  Sister Anne is predeceased by her parents, and her sister Myra (Ted Gerber deceased).

Sister Anne is survived by her beloved sister, Gloria (Dr. Robert Shaw deceased) and cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Following the sudden death of her mother, Sister Anne returned to Italy in 1925 along with her two younger sisters and their father Augusto.  It was here she lived for the next six years.  Sister Anne and her sisters returned to Canada and Fort William, Ontario (Thunder Bay) in 1931.  Here they were reunited with their father who had returned earlier to Canada for work, preparing to welcome the return of his three daughters.  Sister Anne cared for her family and attended St. Martin’s School.

Sister Anne was employed at St. Joseph’s hospital, prior to entering the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie on May 1, 1938 from her home parish, St. Agnes.

Following completion of her novitiate, in 1940 Sister Anne served as assistant with junior boarders St. Mary’s Academy, North Bay.   In 1941 she moved to Sault Ste. Marie to be the homemaker at Sacred Heart Convent.  From 1941 to 1962 she was caregiver for seniors and children in Thunder Bay. Upon returning to North Bay 1962 she served at St. Mary’s Academy as assistant director of boarders until 1967, Anne then went to Sudbury to serve as sacristan at Christ the King Parish returning to North Bay in 1969 where she served as sacristan at Pro Cathedral of the Assumption.  She returned to Thunder Bay in 1979 and served in ministry as sacristan at Avila Centre and as caregiver for seniors at St. Joseph’s Heritage.  Anne also served as sacristan for nine years at Corpus Christi Parish, Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) until 1988, she then returned to Sudbury where she served as pastoral visitor at Christ the King Apartments.  Sister Anne returned to Thunder Bay and provided volunteer support and care at St. Joseph’s Heritage until 1995.

Sister Anne retired to the Motherhouse in North Bay in 1995 following fifty seven years of active ministry. Anne’s interest and care for each sister and staff member living, working and serving in ministry at the Motherhouse knew no limits.  Her spirit of ‘joy’ and kindness was gift to each person she encountered during seventy-nine years of faithful, loving service to God, her congregational family, children, seniors and those in need in Northern Ontario.
