Message from Dr. Carl Peters

I was in grade 7 at Land of Lakes school in Burks Falls, Ontario, in 1977-78 (Steve would have been in grade 8) when I first heard about him. He would sit alone and draw—he always carried a sketchbook with him. I admired him then and when I got to high school (Almaguin Highlands Secondary School in South River, Ontario—that would have been in 1980) I got to know him through our mutual friend, Eric. I moved back to St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1982 and we exchanged letters and drawings—even cassette tapes recording our conversations with one another, posting them back and forth—for a long time after that. I did not hear from Steve again until 1997 when I was a PhD student at Simon Fraser University in BC. I might be a little off with my dates. In any case, I have recently been thinking about Steve and I went online wondering if I might find him. I did not expect to find his obituary almost a year after his passing. I feel the loss. I admired Steve more than I could have expressed. I think he was the most gifted artist I have ever known. He could draw upside down on his head and it would be as good as Raphael. Yes, he was that good. Looking back I realize that Steve was one of the best friends I have ever had, and I want to give this beautiful poem by another great poet to Steve’s family and all those who loved him.

“The Road Approaches,” by George Bowering

The road approaches
or it goes, or we do

endlessly, forgetting
our start. The heart

does break. The road
is repaired

I will never forget you, Steve. Never farewell—only fare forward.

Steven/Mr Wolf - It's only just now that I heard of your passing, as we only knew each other in our capacity as poets on the sites we shared our work on. Regardless, you made an indelible impression as a writer and a mentor. You were not only an incredible talent in your own right, but a force-multiplier who encouraged others to believe in their work as you did. What a gift. And what an original - they definitely broke the mold when you were cast, my friend. I can only imagine what a blessing you have been to your close loved ones, to whom I extend my deepest condolences.

May you roam free and wild now,

Sommer.

I knew Steve for over 10 years as an employee at Nipissing Orthopaedic Lab. He had many talents including the arts and made some of the best caricatures I have ever seen. He was always congenial and had a very keen sense of humour. He had incredible life experiences. Everyone at the Lab were saddened to hear of his death and he will be missed.

Our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Steven. May the grieving process be as gentle as possible and may warm memories fill your heart. We are sorry for your loss.

Dear Steven, Mr. Wolf,

Thank you for sharing your beautiful writing with me on many occasions, you were gifted. Your prose was insightful and deep as you were.

You always greeted us with a smile and warm hospitality when we came to visit. Your love for Ataya and Lori was evident. You doated on your princesses. And you always had proud and loving words about your daughter, too.

I'll always be grateful that you were with Lori when she was ill. You saved her life and we will forever be grateful to you for this.

Your many kind encouraging words were and are appreciated. They touched my heart. I will continue my work with the hope of easing the suffering in the world in your honor.

May you journey in peace now Mr. Wolf and may your heart be warmed and comforted in love.

With Love,
Sherry

Very sad to here about the loss of one of my most brilliant students.
When I mentioned to my wife about Steve's passing she said "He was one of your students wasn't he?" In retrospect I would have to say it was the other way round. Both he and his buddy Eric McConnacie were in my class at the same time and was always a joy.
When I lived in North Bay Steve dropped by for a visit and my wife and three children at the time all went down to Lake Nippising for a swim. With a small car there was no room for the dog who as a rule went where ever we went so given we were a five minute drive down the hill to the lake we put her on the roof.
On the following Monday in class Steve presented me with a drawing of all of us in the car including the dog.
It looked like a Norman Rockwell drawing.
Those of us who chose the teaching profession and enjoyed it are grateful to have students like Steve and not just because he was a gifted and creative artist but primarily because he was such a nice person.
My sympathies to all those who were close to him and will surely miss him.
