Dennis Neethling peacefully passed away at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Laura, sons Edward (Deborah), Paul (Mae), Stephen (Julie), and Greg (Alisha) and his grandchildren Mark, Jasmine, Ian, Calvin, Keanna, Cameron, Jaiden, Amon, Dren and Styler. He is predeceased by his parents Walter and Frances and his brother Ronald (Charlotte). Dennis was born in Cape Town South Africa and was formally trained as a pipefitter/plumber. Emigrating to Canada in 1957 Dennis worked in the Port Dalhousie dockyards before enlisting the RCAF with postings in Cold Lake Alberta and North Bay Ontario. Dennis and Laura were married May 6, 1961 in Toronto Ontario and upon discharge from the RCAF, he enrolled in the Ontario Teacher’s college. He began his teaching career at Sturgeon Falls Secondary School. After transferring to Algonquin Composite School, he was a member of the original staff at West Ferris Secondary School in 1970 and taught through to 1994, with his final year at McElligot Secondary in Mattawa. Dennis often spoke how the best part of teaching were the students. He always enjoyed meeting his former students years after, whether at the family business of the Pool Centre or at some of his favorite shopping stops. Dennis was very active in the community as well, serving on the planning board for the Township East Ferris for over 30 years as well as an elected Councillor for 6 years. He was especially proud of his provincial appointment to the OMERS board from 2001 through 2005. A leader by example, Dennis quiet demeanor and thoughtfulness endeared him to many, whether family, friends, co-workers, students or customers. We will miss him dearly. As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Whispering Pines Funeral Home and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Donation to the charity of your choice would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Online condolences can be made to www.mcguintyfuneralhome.com
