Mario Gaetan Jean-Marc Lavoie

It is with great sadness that the Lavoie family is announcing the passing of Mario on July 14th, 2021, at the North Bay Regional Health Centre after a long battle with cancer (spindle cell sarcoma).

Mario Lavoie was born on May 7th, 2001, in North Bay to Patrick Lavoie and Sylvie Breton-Lavoie. He will be deeply missed by his parents, his brother Gabriel Lavoie, his grandmothers Cécile Lavoie (Cyril) and Diane Breton (Jean-Marc), uncles, aunts, cousins, other members of his extended family and his numerous friends. He joins his two grandfathers Cyril Lavoie and Jean-Marc Breton in the great beyond.

Mario went to elementary school at École Pavillon Héritage and École Publique Héritage. A kind and gentle soul, Mario took a big interest in video games and card games like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. He shared these hobbies with his brother and his friends. Later, he took up sports as well, such as basketball, tennis, curling, and his favourite, downhill skiing. But, he would really take up any opportunity to be around his beloved friends, even if the activities weren't his cup of tea! He also spent many summers at the family cottage.

A bit shy and reserved at first, Mario truly blossomed at École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin, where he was a member of the Café Chantant music group. This is where he found his love for guitar and music, and where he could also share his optimistic outlook and his serene, happy-go-lucky spirit. He was also involved in sporting teams for track and field, tennis and curling.

Mario then pursued his postsecondary studies at Nipissing University in North Bay in computer science. Mario would have liked to establish himself in Ottawa after finishing his schooling and to work in video game development.

Mario had many different jobs during his short time with us. He worked as an assistant for the École Publique Héritage summer camps, at Northern Tikes, and as a ski instructor for Laurentian Ski Hill.

Unfortunately, in July 2020, Mario was diagnosed with a very rare cancer called spindle cell sarcoma. Despite this difficult challenge, Mario displayed a strong spirit and graciousness from beginning to end, often putting the comfort and well-being of others before his own. His family is encouraging donations to the Canadian Sarcoma Research and Clinical Collaboration (CanSaRCC) [https://www.cansarcc.ca/] in the name of Mario Gaëtan Jean-Marc Lavoie.

Mario's family would also like to thank the many members of all the medical teams that devoted themselves to his treatment and the betterment of his health during his hardship, such as the Drs. Joel Carter, Lacey Pitre, Abha Gupta, Ryan Carlson, Stephanie Brill and Dr. Inez Jinnah, the employees of the North Bay Regional Health Centre, Health Sciences North, the Northeast Cancer Centre, the NOFCC, LHIN and VON organizations, Nipissing Orthopaedic Laboratory Inc., Robinson's, Shoppers Drug Mart, McGuinty Funeral Home and the Davedi Club, and all individuals who helped support the Lavoie family during this difficult time.

There will be a celebration of life held at the Davedi Club in North Bay on Thursday, July 29th, 2021. Doors will open at 2 pm and the ceremony will begin at 3 pm. A meal will be served. There will be a private religious ceremony for family members only on a date to be determined at the All-Saints Mausoleum in North Bay.

C'est avec une grande tristesse que la famille de Mario Lavoie vous annonce son décès survenu le 14 juillet 2021 au Centre régional de santé de North Bay après un long combat contre le cancer (spindle cell sarcoma).

Il est né le 7 mai 2001 à Patrick Lavoie et Sylvie Breton-Lavoie à North Bay. Il est survécu et manquera énormément à ses parents, son grand frère Gabriel Lavoie, ses grands-mères Cécile Lavoie (Cyril) et Diane Breton (Jean-Marc), oncles, tantes, cousins et cousines et autres membres de sa famille étendue ainsi que ses nombreux amis. Il rejoint ses deux grands-pères Cyril Lavoie et Jean-Marc Breton dans l'éternité.

Mario a fait son école élémentaire à l'École Pavillon Héritage et l'École Publique Héritage. Un être doux et gentil, Mario était un grand amateur des jeux vidéo et des cartes Pokémon et Yu-Gi-Oh!, passe-temps qu'il a partagés avec ses amis et son frère. Plus tard, il s'intéressa aussi aux sports comme le basketball, le tennis, le curling et le ski alpin qui était son sport préféré, ainsi que n'importe quelle occasion pour être dans la présence de ses amis. Il passait aussi plusieurs de ses étés au camp de famille.

D'abord un peu gêné et réservé, Mario s'est réellement épanoui à l'École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin, où il a été membre du Café Chantant. C'est ici qu'il a pu développer son amour pour la guitare et la musique et où il a pu partager son esprit serein et optimiste. Il a aussi fait partie des équipes de course de fond, tennis et curling.

Mario a ensuite poursuivi ses études postsecondaires à l'Université Nipissing à North Bay en sciences informatiques. Une fois ses études terminées, Mario aurait aimé s'établir à Ottawa pour travailler dans la création des jeux vidéo.

Mario a eu de divers emplois pendant son court temps avec nous. Il a travaillé en tant qu'assistant aux camps d'été à l'École Publique Héritage, à Northern Tikes, et comme instructeur de ski alpin à la pente Laurentienne à North Bay.

Malheureusement, Mario a été diagnostiqué avec un cancer extrêmement rare, le spindle cell sarcoma, au mois de juillet 2020. Malgré son épreuve épouvantable, il s'est montré extrêmement fort d'esprit et gracieux du début de son combat jusqu'à la fin, souvent en mettant le confort et le bien-être des autres avant le sien. La famille de Mario aimerait aussi remercier tous les membres des équipes médicales qui se sont dévouées au traitement et au bien-être de la santé de Mario pendant sa dure épreuve, tels que les Drs. Joel Carter, Lacey Pitre, Abha Gupta, Ryan Carlson, Stephanie Brill et Dr. Inez Jinnah les employés du Centre régional de santé de North Bay, Horizon Santé-Nord, le Centre de cancérologie du Nord-Est, des organisations LHIN, VON, NOFCC, Nipissing Orthopaedic Laboratory Inc., Robinson's, Shoppers Drug Mart, McGuinty Funeral Home, le Davedi Club, et tous les autres gens qui ont apporté de l'appui à la famille pendant ce temps difficile.

Il y aura une célébration de vie tenue au Davedi Club à North Bay le jeudi 29 juillet 2021. Les portes ouvriront vers 14h et la cérémonie débutera vers 15h. Un repas sera servi.
