It is with sadness that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the death of Sister Nora Mullen (Sister M. St. David) at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse on June 2, 2017.Sister Nora was born, September 6, 1932, in Milnet, Ontario (District of Sudbury).  She was the seventh of thirteen children, eight boys and five girls born to Frank Mullen and Beatrice Downey. Sister Nora is predeceased by her parents, brothers Patrick (Gloria), Frank (Doreen), Garry (Gwen), Michael (Rosella), Vernon, Douglas (Merle) and Gordon (Vivian), and her sisters Beatrice Monaghan (Gene), and Lois Dawson (Warren). She is survived by her brother Lawrence (Anna) and sisters Dorothy Raymond (Peter deceased) and Elizabeth (Betty) McClymont (David), and many cherished nieces, nephews and their families. Sister Nora received her Secondary School Commercial Diploma from the Sudbury Mining and Technical School and was then employed by the Bank of Nova Scotia in Sudbury, prior to entering the Sisters of St. Joseph from her home parish, Holy Trinity in September 1949.  After completing the novitiate, and Teachers College in North Bay, Sister Nora taught in the elementary school panel in Elliot Lake, Fort William (Thunder Bay) and Schreiber. From 1957-1960, she introduced the Commercial Option at Marymount College, Sudbury, where she taught Religion, History and Economics. It was during this time that Sister Nora received her Accountancy Specialist Certificate. In 1961-1964, she introduced and taught in the Commercial Program at Mount
St. Joseph, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  While teaching in both the elementary and secondary panels, Nora successfully completed her Bachelor’s Degree in History and her Masters of Theology Degree from Notre Dame University. The need for Adult Faith Development and Youth Catechesis prompted Sister Nora to pursue Catechetical and Pastoral studies at the Divine Word Institute in London, Ontario.   She later became a member of the Catechetical Team for the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.  Catechetical studies became her forté from 1967-1982.  Nora also served as Director of Religious Studies for the Roman Catholic Separate School Board in Sudbury in addition to serving on the congregation’s Leadership Team. In 1982, Nora was elected General Superior of the Congregation, a position in which she faithfully served for eight years. Following a sabbatical, Sister Nora was named the Executive Director of the Catholic Centre, Sudbury. It was here that she assisted with the initiation and implementation of ‘Renew’, a program that focused on adult faith development for parishes and their parishioners throughout the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. Sister Nora retired to St. Joseph’s Motherhouse in 2007, where her joy for life, family, friends and community made a difference in every gathering, encounter, and celebration.  Nora’s love for all of God’s people, endeared her to many.The body of Sister Nora will be received at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, 2017.Evening Prayer and Visitation will be held in the Holy Family Chapel, at 7:00 p.m.  The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2017, in the Sacred Heart Chapel.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Bay, Ontario.
